A St. Augustine man and his houseguest were awakened Friday morning by two armed intruders kicking in the door of the home. They barged in and struck the guest multiple times with a pool cue and a handgun. Robbery was the apparent motive.

The attack occurred at 4:15 a.m., as the first victim slept on the couch and the homeowner slept in a back bedroom. After beating the initial victim, one of the crooks rushed to the bedroom and pointed a gun in the face of the second victim, demanding money.

To prove he meant business, the gun-wielding suspect fired a shot inside the house. Convinced of the thug’s violent intent, the homeowner handed over more than $2,000 in cash he had inside the house.

The attack left both victims reeling, with the first assault victim admitting, “Every time I close my eyes, I see his face. It’s nerve wracking, ya know. Now it feels like I have to watch over my shoulders. I’ve never felt this fear in my life.”

The beating left that victim with multiple contusions and required several stitches to close a wound on the back of his head.

St. Johns County Sheriff’s deputies continue to search for the suspects. The man shown in the composite sketch above is approximately 6 feet tall with curly brown hair. The second suspect is a white male, roughly 5 feet 6 inches tall. The two left the scene in a 1980’s or 90’s white Toyota or Honda sedan with a dark-colored rocker panel and a loud muffler.

This case reminds us how quickly violence can erupt and shatter our peace of mind. A professionally installed and monitored home security system can help protect you and your family. In this case, a blaring alarm siren likely would have sent the crooks running for cover. Or, if they had the poor judgment to stick around, police rapidly arriving at the scene could have caught them in the act.
